Where most inventors stop in their tracks is when they see a quote for an injection mold. I have seen inventors get so frustrated. They put all their money into getting a patent and can’t even afford to manufacture their invention.

Instead of pouring all your money into patent attorneys then having no money for manufacturing, why not do it the other way around.

Build your widget first and then get your patent.

So if you think building a mold is nothing more than carving out a piece of steel or aluminum, think again. There is massive engineering and precision that goes into making a mold. If you invention is made out of Jello…Cool. There is nothing to it.

If it is made out of plastic, you better get ready to fork over $3000 or more depending on the size of your part, plastic, how many cavities, cooling times, expansion, cold runners, hot runners, gates…..the list goes on.

If you want to go to China to have your mold built….Good luck! Especially if it is not molding your parts correctly…you will have to get it back on a boat (8-10 weeks there and back ) to fix a hunk of P 20 steel.

This blog post if for people who are new to injection molding.

If you have no experience with injection molding, this post may help you understand the business a little more.

Making a mold for your product is one of the most expensive steps in the manufacturing process. This is where inventors bail out and usually get dissapointed.

There is a lot of sophisticated engineering and precision when it comes to make a mold. Don’t think of the mold as a Jello mold. Think of it as blocks of steel or aluminum with holes for injecting hot plastics, cooling water, knockout pins, runners, cavities, and so on. Lost yet?
